In 1963, at the age of 31, Dervla Murphy cycled from her home in Lismore, Ireland to New Delhi, India. The journey took her approximately six months, and throughout she kept a journal of her experiences. Two years later these were published as ‘Full Tilt’.
Dervla has continued to travel and write books about her experiences, and although she is now 83 years old, she is still working as hard as ever.
A friend lent me ‘Full Tilt’ when I was travelling in India myself. I had in fact just completed my own (very much shorter) bike ride, and I felt an instant affinity with Dervla. A few years later I began planning this film, and I was lucky enough to have Dervla’s support, and the support of her publishers Eland books.
Whilst my own journey in making this film was far shorter and less physically strenuous, I hope it goes at least some way to capturing the essence of some of the places she visited, more than half a century ago.
